Problem statement

In many organizations and industrial sites, the network has grown gradually through manual changes. Device configurations differ from one router to the next, documentation is out of date, and every change depends on the knowledge of a few people.

In such a network, a small configuration error can lead to an outage, troubleshooting takes time, and managing VPN tunnels between remote sites becomes complex. In environments such as mining, where sites are dispersed and physical access is difficult, these issues become even more significant.

Technical approach

The approach is to turn repetitive network tasks into standardized, automated routines. Baseline configurations for MikroTik and Cisco devices are defined as templates, and scripts are used to apply changes, create backups and compare the current configuration with the intended state.

Alongside this, continuous monitoring of links, routes, VPN tunnels and DNS surfaces problems before they reach users. The goal is a network whose behavior is predictable, whose changes are recorded and whose maintenance does not depend on a single person. This is ongoing work that evolves with the needs of the infrastructure.

Design decisions

Network automation in this project starts with a simple principle: standardize before you automate. As long as every router is configured differently, scripts will be fragile. Baseline templates for naming, addressing, firewall rules, routing and management access are therefore defined first, and devices are gradually aligned with them.

The second principle is small, reversible changes. Each change is compared with the current configuration before it is applied, and a backup is available so that a quick rollback is possible if something goes wrong.

Reliability, security and maintainability

  • Failover paths: critical links have a backup route or tunnel, so a single link failure does not cut off an entire site.
  • Management access: devices can only be managed from defined management networks and with individual accounts.
  • VPN: tunnels use appropriate encryption and managed keys, and their state is monitored.
  • Documentation: configuration backups and change history form part of the living network documentation.

In industrial environments, the network carries sensor data, control systems and operational communication. Separating operational traffic from office traffic and closely monitoring links to remote sites is therefore especially important. Automation also has limits: changes to links that carry control traffic are planned in maintenance windows and remain under human review rather than being applied fully automatically.

Possible extensions

Next steps can include keeping configurations under version control, automated testing of changes before deployment, and feeding network events into monitoring dashboards. More on this approach is available on the network automation service page.
